    Description

I am a dealer in antique and vintage linens, and I always keep an eye out for pretty antique clothing.
This is a taffeta petticoat in cream white.  I estimate it to date to the early years of the 1900s.  It has a 1.75" waistband with a placket that closes with ties - it could be tied at the center back or side. There was a hook and eye closure but the hook is gone.  Right below the waist it is smooth to give reduced bulk at the top, and at hip level there's a slightly gathered flounce, and it flares to the wide sweep at the hem.  The hem has a 4" turnunder.  The construction is very nice, including fully finished seams. Measurements are listed below.  The taffeta has that lovely rustle as it moves.
measurements, all taken with the garment lying flat:
    12.5" across front at waist
    1.75" waistband width
    18" across front at hip
    48" sweep at hem
37" length from top to hem
I have laundered and pressed this and found the fabric to be in sound condition, soft and supple and not brittle.  There are a few condition issues to point out: a small pinhole at the side of the front at the waist, the missing hook, and a little staining at the hem bottom.  All of these are shown in the last several photos. This petticoat would be great under a wedding or formal gown, or wear it on its own as a skirt!
I am storing this in my non-smoking home.
