Government makes inquiry to buy 20,000 new anti-tank guided missiles for Army

The Defence Ministry has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to procure over 20,000 new-generation anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), along with 1,500 launchers and simulators, for the Indian Army.
This initiative is aimed at enhancing the Army’s operational capabilities to effectively target and destroy tanks and other armoured vehicles.
The procurement will fall under the “Buy (Indian-IDDM)” category, which mandates at least 60% indigenous content, a source in the defence ministry said. This approach prioritizes products that are designed, developed, and manufactured in India, ensuring that a minimum of 50% of the total contract value comes from domestic sources.
The RFI seeks to finalize the system’s qualitative requirements (SQRs), determine the procurement category, and identify potential Indian vendors capable of supplying the new-generation ATGMs and their launchers within four years of the contract award.
These ATGMs are expected to operate in diverse terrains, including plains, deserts, high altitudes up to 5,500 meters (18,000 feet), as well as coastal areas and islands.
They will be strategically deployed along India’s western border with Pakistan and the northern border with China.
The new-generation missiles must function effectively in both day and night conditions, adapting to various weather scenarios such as rain, fog, humidity, and dust. Additionally, they are required to operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -45°C to 45°C.
In terms of capabilities, the ATGMs should be able to neutralize a range of targets, including enemy tanks, armoured personnel carriers, low-flying helicopters, concrete structures, and other weapon platforms.
The design should also allow for modular upgrades to accommodate future needs without requiring major structural changes. Moreover, the RFI emphasizes that the systems must integrate seamlessly with existing platforms, ensuring that the performance of any components is not compromised.
This procurement initiative represents a significant step toward bolstering the Indian Army’s capabilities in modern warfare.
